For those that don’t know, why don’t you give us a rundown of yourself?
-
my name is Molly, I am the founder & maker of dunkle authentic. I was born in Colorado & grew up skiing or snowboarding most winter weekends with my family. in the 90’s we had a ‘family adventure’ & moved to New Zealand & Australia for a number of years where we all luckily became dual-citizens. in 2012 I decided to have my own little ‘adventure’ after College & moved back to Brisbane where I had been keeping in touch with old pals over the years (mostly via snail mail, yes). thanks to my mom, I have definitely caught the travel bug, & usually find myself planning my next trip back to the US to visit family & friends.

How did the conception of Dunkle Authentic come about?
-
the conception of dunkle authentic started from a pure curiosity when I made lip balm for the first time at age 12. my dad is an environmental chemist & soon stepped in to help with ingredients & manufacturing processes, which he still does to this day. from those early days, I became incredibly passionate about simple, natural ingredients, & it developed into a love for empowering, natural beauty. dunkle authentic launched in 2013 as an extension of those values.
-
What are the values and messages you try to employ into Dunkle Authentic and your customers; how have these values changed and evolved as Dunkle Authentic grows?
-
recently I re-read an old business plan from the first business I started as a 12 year old, the tagline read ‘all natural, truly homemade.’ how humbling to know that while the messaging has of course changed, that tagline could still describe my current business 17 years later. my desire for simplicity has been strengthened over the years, along with my awareness for the environmental impacts of manufacturing. there are 4 values & I strive to live both personally & through my brand, everyday;
feel-good; inspiring both physical & mental feel-good moments
simple; curating to give space to quality & design
ethical; honouring people, animals, & the environment
curious; exploring, travelling, & asking questions

What does transparency mean to you as a small business owner?
-
transparency means sharing the true story about my business practices; from sourcing raw materials from farmers to hand pouring the products. as a small business with smaller purchasing power, it takes considerable investigation through multiple suppliers to seek the true origin of a raw material. Lois Hazel has long been a huge inspiration for sharing the direct source of materials on the website, I love that, thank you.
-
Tell us about your choice to work with organic ingredients...
 -
using organic ingredients stems from my values of ‘simple & ethical’. organic raw materials by nature are kept as raw as possible & demonstrate the agricultural connection with the farmers who harvest the plants. I am looking to grow partnerships with the farmers directly & celebrate the ‘terroir’ from each harvest. by keeping my ingredient list simple, I can highlight the quality of each raw material & in turn the finished product.

How does the TerraCycle recycling initiative work and why is that important to you?
-
TerraCycle is an incredible global organization originally from New Jersey that carefully recycles ‘hard-to-recycle’ materials. dunkle authentic began partnering with TerraCycle in February 2018 to collect empty packaging from consumers (from any brand) & send in bulk to the recycling factory. it is important to me to consider the full product life-cycle & how my products impact the environment even after they are used up. the partnership has since inspired me to consider all aspects of my packaging; from simply switching out plastic to paper packaging tape, to re-launching the face oil with the glass dropper instead of a plastic pump, to currently undergoing a huge reformulation of my foundations to suit an aluminum tin instead of the plastic powder container.

Where do you draw inspiration from? What does it look like to you?
-
travel is always a source of inspiration for me. perhaps it is first stepping away from daily operations & having space to reflect on where the brand is at, then it is taking in delicious new experiences & noting interesting aesthetics from around the world. my lipsticks are named after different places that I love & every product is, can confirm, travel-friendly in size & design.

Tell us a bit more about your beautiful face oil.
The face oil is a blend of organic jojoba and rose hip oils, rose Maroc absolute, & vitamin e. it is plant-based, super nourishing, and packed with natural antioxidants. I first tried using face oils when I was studying makeup artistry, our teacher was a huge fan and I too soon fell in love with the texture and simplicity. I worked on my own blend of oils for a number of years before launching, and it has since become a true staple in my product line and of course, daily routine. Try massaging a couple of drops into the skin before bed, closing the eyes and breathing deep… a treat for the skin, and the mind.

To wrap up, what are five sustainability tips you try to practice in your daily life?
-
  1. change consumption habits by focusing on style & quality first
  2. make recycling habitual by creating a place to store ‘hard-to-recycle’ items until they can be dropped off
  3. purchase vintage, second-hand or Ethical.
  4. try cooking vegetarian recipes, black bean enchiladas are always a win
  5. b.y.o. coffee cup, naturally
